Counselling, Psychotherapy & Coaching

Sudbury Road, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk

Hello and a warm welcome

I wonder if you have reached this page because you are feeling consistently anxious, stressed or overwhelmed? Perhaps you feel stuck, lost or disconnected, or are struggling to heal from the legacy of past traumatic experiences and loss that continue to impact your life and relationships? Or maybe you are unsure what the problem is and simply need to talk things through with someone kind, caring and impartial? Modern life can be tough enough, without the additional challenges we meet along our path. Truth is, we are all vulnerable as humans and need a helping hand at times - so perhaps I can help?

As an experienced and accredited UK registered integrative counsellor and trauma therapist, I offer you a calm, respectful and supportive space to help unravel and make sense of what is happening for you. I tailor my approach to your needs, drawing from a holistic and creative mix of psychotherapies including traditional talking therapy, somatic therapy practices, mindfulness and breathwork, psychodynamic therapy, clinical hypnotherapy, parts therapy, EMDR, CBT, NLP and TFT (a tapping therapy).

I work with individual adults struggling with all kinds of emotional difficulties and dysregulation, particularly anxiety, stress, trauma, phobias, relational difficulties and women's mid-life challenges. Whether you wish to access therapy online from anywhere in the UK, or in-person in my dedicated therapy room in the Suffolk countryside (easily accessible from the A14 at Bury St Edmunds and the A134 from Sudbury), a warm and gentle welcome awaits. So, if you are finding things difficult, please take a moment to find out how I can help.

My offer to you

How I can help

I take an intuitive, caring, and collaborative approach to therapy, adapting my methods according to the unique human being that you are, and the outcome you seek.

First and foremost, I offer a calm, respectful and supportive space dedicated to helping you unravel and make sense of what is happening in your life. My commitment to you is to sit gently alongside, helping as best as I can with whatever you bring to therapy.

Taking time to talk - to be really heard by someone you feel comfortable with - will help you explore, understand and work through your difficulties.  This is what I offer you, whilst helping you learn new strategies to grow in self-awareness, resourcefulness, resilience and general wellbeing, so that you can move forward again in life with positivity, meaning and purpose.

I can help with a multitude of very human problems, including:
  • anxiety
  • stress & overwhelm
  • trauma
  • low mood
  • relationship difficulties
  • loss & grief
  • negative thinking
  • phobias
  • unhelpful habits
  • confidence & self-esteem
  • personal development
  • wellbeing & life balance

How it works

Whether we are working in-person or online we will agree a regular time and day, to be your 'space' for as long as you need, usually weekly or fortnightly.

You may only require a few solution-focused sessions for a specific problem or goal, or to learn anxiety or emotional coping strategies. Or perhaps you need someone impartial alongside for a short while to ground and 'hold' you steady in uncertain times. Alternatively, you may benefit from us spending longer together exploring the roots of your difficulties at a deeper level.

As our journey continues, I will gently invite your curiosity and self-reflection. I will kindly and compassionately bring to awareness any unhelpful thoughts, perceptions or defensive behaviour patterns that may be holding you back. Together we will find new, healthier alternatives of being.

Longer term therapy, when undertaken at the right pace, can help you to safely release and process deeper, scary, painful and often distressing emotions to bring a sense of wholeness and change.

Whatever the length and nature of therapy, sessions are a full 60 minute hour unless specified.

 Therapies Offered

As an integrative therapist I am qualified across a range of psychotherapies including:

As a trauma therapist I look to understand your story, focusing on ‘what happened to you’ and what you endured, rather than ‘what’s wrong with you.' When working with trauma and distress presentations especially, I will draw from somatic approaches, perhaps inviting the use of breathwork, mindfulness, movement and creativity - because often the body can solve and release what the mind cannot, so bringing healing and resolution.

In addition to the specific therapies listed above, I will use Humanistic, Psychodynamic, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) approaches, and parts therapies, including using Voice Dialogue, Jungian Psychology approaches and aspects of Internal Family Systems (IFS).

I am a strong advocator of ‘one size does not fit all’. Instead, I adapt and tailor a blend of what I have found works best from different psychotherapies. Together, we will find what works best to develop your own resilience and autonomy, and facilitate choices that move you to toward the outcome you seek.

Initial Consultation

I appreciate that starting therapy and finding the right person to help may feel daunting, confusing, and even overwhelming when you are struggling already. For this reason, if I have availability to take on new clients, I will offer you a FREE 20 minute, no obligation consultation, via telephone or Zoom.

Whether you wish to engage with therapy face to face or online, I am a firm believer that the therapeutic relationship is key to a successful outcome.  Your initial consultation will help to give a real sense of how it would be working together and how I can help you, whilst providing an opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have. The choice is then yours.

When you choose me as your therapist I will do my best to help you feel at ease and informed from our very first session together. Then held safely within the boundary of a regular, consistent, confidential, respectful, and  supportive professional relationship, we will work together to find a way forward that is right for you, the circumstances you face, and the changes you seek.

About me

Hello, I'm Anita, an experienced, UK registered and accredited Integrative Counsellor and Trauma Therapist, and an Associate Tutor with the Bedfordshire Centre for Therapeutic Studies. I am also a registered Clinical Hypnotherapist, licensed Master NLP Practitioner and a practitioner in both EMDR and TFT. I work in-person in Suffolk and online with clients from across the UK.

As a Clinical Trauma Professional I have a deep passion for championing emotional wellbeing, resilience and self-compassion, and take a gentle, holistic and humanistic approach to therapy. Put simply, this means that I will consider your mental, emotional and physiological needs as a whole.

I have a particular interest in the mind-body relationship and modern neurobiological research around how the body holds anxiety, stress and trauma. Based on this, all my work integrates body-based ('bottom-up') therapeutic approaches, such as breathwork, mindfulness and somatic practices, with traditional 'top-down' talking therapy to bring about effective change, healing and growth.

I also incorporate creative practices into sessions. This way of working helps access parts of the mind that sit outside of conscious awareness, and supports working safely at a deeper level to explore, understand and ultimately change any unhealthy, unconscious processes and behaviours. It is often these unconscious patterns which usually develop in childhood - and helped then, but no longer serve us in the present - keeping us stuck.

I have been active in the therapeutic world since 2012, launching my private practice in 2019. I have previously worked as a counsellor for MTCIC, a local social enterprise, and as an Anxiety UK Approved Therapist. I also have extensive previous experience working in both corporate sales and marketing, and within state education.

From my peaceful and comfortable client room in Bury St Edmunds, or online via secure video link, I offer you a respectful, confidential and supportive space to talk, get curious, explore and grow. I offer both open-ended and short-term therapy according to your needs. I also offer solution-focused, rapid change work for specific problems or phobias.

I work individually with adults of all ages - from  students and young adults (age 18+) just starting out in life, to those approaching or in retirement.
